Both towns were in the middle of the Battle of the Bulge and completely destroyed. Between them twelve typical villages are scattered along both slopes of the valley.

La Roche is the most popular holiday resort of the Ourthe valley. Only 70 km from Liège and 20 km from Marche-en-Famenne, it lies in a meander of the river dominated by the ruins of a medieval castle.

It has many sign-posted paths for hikers and exciting mountain bike circuits in the Ourthe valley and its gorges.

The castle, of which only the ruins survive, probably originated in the 9th century.

Built on a rocky escarpment that dominates the town, it offers the visitor an exceptional view of the small town and the Ourthe valley. Recent diggings have uncovered new rooms and vestiges of the 15th century.

Illuminated during festivals and in summer. Visitors must have attracted Countess Berthe, in her days: her ghost still appears daily in July/August and on Saturdays only (weather permitting) between Easter and September. Guided-book in English available.

Museum of the Battle of the Ardennes Over 1500 sq./m on three levels, the museum displays 120 dummies representing American, British, German and Belgian soldiers with their respective equipment.

It also displays some 20 military vehicles, documents, photographs, a series of dioramas, light and heavy weaponry, personal belongings and equipment found on the battleground in the vicinity of the town. Explanatory panels are in three languages including English
